“You are not the only one. Thank you for bringing these people to help us.”

“You’re welcome. I wish I could credit for that, but it was more like things just happened that way.”

“I’m surprised you remembered us at all.”

“You saved my life, after I wandered away from the village. That’s hard to forget.”

“We thought your people would be afraid of us, and come to our colony to wipe us out.”

“None of them believed me when I told the story. They punished me for wandering off, and gave me extra work for lying to them about where I had been.”

“They really didn’t believe you?”

“You have to remember that we are mammals. The air down there does bad things to us. None of them were thinking straight to begin with.”

“Still, it would be easier to believe that someone helped you, rather than you just somehow managed to survive on your own.”

“They thought my grandmother had helped me somehow. They punished her, too.”

“Grandmother?”

“My mother’s mother.”

“I see. You mammals are more attached to your ancestors than we are.”

“That makes sense, I guess.”

Nayla thought a moment, and said, “I suppose it would. I hadn’t thought about it before.”

Milly asked, “Why would you? It’s not like you had a lot of mammals to compare to, is it?”

“No, it isn’t. Our people are generally afraid of mammals. The ones we’re familiar with all want to eat our eggs.”

“I can see why you wouldn’t want them around.”

“The elders were so afraid of your people that they collapsed all the entrances to the colony but one.”

“Wait, I remember now. You took me home through a tunnel that came out a lot closer to our village.”

“We did. I had hoped I would see you again, but the elders said it was too dangerous to be around a mammal. They collapsed the tunnel the next day.”

“It was a long time before I was allowed to leave the village again. I went to where I thought you had brought me out, but all I saw was a big pile of rocks. I thought I must have remembered wrong.”

“You tried to come and see me? I wanted to come see you, but I couldn’t figure out any way to survive the trip.”

“My grandma told me I must have just gotten lucky, when I found your cave. She didn’t think I would survive trying to find it again.”

Nayla said, “It’s so nice to get to talk to you. We had a hard time, when you were here before.”

Milly replied, “We didn’t have all the tech the BSR fleet has, to translate for us. It surely does make things nicer. Do you think you’ll be able to come up to the ship, so that we could get to know one another better?”

“That would be nice. You can’t come down here, can you?”

“I could, but it wouldn’t be good for me, sorry.”

“No problem. I just wanted to make sure why you wanted me to come up there.”

I said, “I personally guarantee your safety, if you decide to come aboard the Gene Cernan.
