âYou are not the only one. Thank you for bringing these people to help us.â
âYouâre welcome. I wish I could credit for that, but it was more like things just happened that way.â
âIâm surprised you remembered us at all.â
âYou saved my life, after I wandered away from the village. Thatâs hard to forget.â
âWe thought your people would be afraid of us, and come to our colony to wipe us out.â
âNone of them believed me when I told the story. They punished me for wandering off, and gave me extra work for lying to them about where I had been.â
âThey really didnât believe you?â
âYou have to remember that we are mammals. The air down there does bad things to us. None of them were thinking straight to begin with.â
âStill, it would be easier to believe that someone helped you, rather than you just somehow managed to survive on your own.â
âThey thought my grandmother had helped me somehow. They punished her, too.â
âGrandmother?â
âMy motherâs mother.â
âI see. You mammals are more attached to your ancestors than we are.â
âThat makes sense, I guess.â
Nayla thought a moment, and said, âI suppose it would. I hadnât thought about it before.â
Milly asked, âWhy would you? Itâs not like you had a lot of mammals to compare to, is it?â
âNo, it isnât. Our people are generally afraid of mammals. The ones weâre familiar with all want to eat our eggs.â
âI can see why you wouldnât want them around.â
âThe elders were so afraid of your people that they collapsed all the entrances to the colony but one.â
âWait, I remember now. You took me home through a tunnel that came out a lot closer to our village.â
âWe did. I had hoped I would see you again, but the elders said it was too dangerous to be around a mammal. They collapsed the tunnel the next day.â
âIt was a long time before I was allowed to leave the village again. I went to where I thought you had brought me out, but all I saw was a big pile of rocks. I thought I must have remembered wrong.â
âYou tried to come and see me? I wanted to come see you, but I couldnât figure out any way to survive the trip.â
âMy grandma told me I must have just gotten lucky, when I found your cave. She didnât think I would survive trying to find it again.â
Nayla said, âItâs so nice to get to talk to you. We had a hard time, when you were here before.â
Milly replied, âWe didnât have all the tech the BSR fleet has, to translate for us. It surely does make things nicer. Do you think youâll be able to come up to the ship, so that we could get to know one another better?â
âThat would be nice. You canât come down here, can you?â
âI could, but it wouldnât be good for me, sorry.â
âNo problem. I just wanted to make sure why you wanted me to come up there.â
I said, âI personally guarantee your safety, if you decide to come aboard the Gene Cernan.
